Another story on jockeys, this time from the Seattle Times:
Since his return, Stillwell has won 25 of 80 races for trainer Charles Essex and has finished in the money in 62 percent of his races for Essex.
"He's a good, hard worker and I like the way he settles horses," Essex said. "We work well together. He does a lot of work in the morning with me and we talk a lot about what he sees with my horses. Or he'll call me at night and tell me some things he sees on replays. It just seems like he keeps getting better and better."
Stillwell started the comeback in 2007, riding in the bush tracks in Oregon. He had seen a documentary on Seabiscuit and told himself, "I need to ride."

The Idaho State Journal does a nice piece on two local jockeys, Todd Thomas and Jerry Remer, and their experiences and challenges breaking into racing.
A snippet:
“I just love it,” said Thomas, who builds medical supplies in Logan as his main job. “Riding is kind of like a hobby that pays. Some days it seems like a job, but I still enjoy it.”
When Thomas, now 38, was a young boy, he thought he might fit into the regular jockey’s mold. “I was that small kid who everyone picked on,” he said. “I didn’t start growing until after high school.”
But after he graduated from high school, he shot skyward in height. That didn’t stop him from galloping and exercising horses. “I was one of the best gallop boys,” he said.
Eventually, he got his license and was offered a ride. “I won my first race right here in Pocatello in 1993 and I thought I was a race rider,” he said. “I had only one more win that whole year.”

Oregon Racing
Brickyardtradition came into the $25,000 Oregon Derby dismissed as a long shot maiden facing proven stakes horses. Nevertheless, shipping up from Northern California where he had been 0 for 7, Brickyardtradition went on to powerfully win, prevailing by two lengths over the 4/5 favorite Seven Torrents. Seven Torrents set right out to the lead, first repelling a challenge from filly Caged Mistress at the three eighths pole, and then opened up a lead turning for home. But jockey Marijo Terleski and Brickyardtradition set their sights on the leaders just outside the sixteenth pole, and brought home a stunning maiden win. Seven Torrents held on for the place, and Promiscuous Lad got up for show.
