From the Medford Mail Tribune:
(Racing Commission Executive Director) Evers said the national mortality level has been set at 1.5 deadly breakdowns per 1,000 horses started in races.
"People seem to feel like that's a realistic number," Evers said. "We were closer to three (deaths) per thousand (starts) at Portland Meadows and the five fairground tracks we currently have in Oregon." The other four are at Union, Prineville, Tillamook and Burns.
Grants Pass had three fatalities in 568 starts, Wotherspoon said.
