Kruger Park left little doubt who the top sprinter on the grounds is as he strolled to a convincing four length victory in the $18,000 Inaugural Handicap. The 5 year old grey was making his first start since a disappointing effort in the Grade 3 Longacres Mile. Kruger Park won both the Seattle Handicap and the Fox Sports Net Handicap at Emerald Downs earlier this year after being claimed for $50,000 by trainer Carlos Moreno at Santa Anita.
Kruger Park broke sharply for jockey Troy Stillwell and went right to the front and was challenged through the opening half mile by Ex Mountain Cop. Turning for home, Chickasaw Park and Immigration mounted challenges at the leader, but Kruger Park repelled all and drew away through the stretch, powering home by four lengths in a final time of 1:09.70, only 3/5ths of a second off Lethal Grande’s track record of 1:09.06 set back in 2003.
Chickasaw Park rallied up the inside but was no match for the leader late and finished second. Immigration who launched a three wide bid at the quarter pole got up for the third spot with long shot Only Be Cause finishing fourth. Ex Mountain Cop faded to be fifth.
Kruger Park returned $4.40 as the wagering favorite.
During the past two summers' abbreviated seasons at Grants Pass Downs, six race horses suffered fatal injuries, several jockeys were hurt and a slew of complaints were made about the track's footing.
The deaths, injuries and complaints prompted the Oregon Racing Commission in August to send a letter to Jackie McBee, manager of the fair and race meets.
"We are informing you at an early date that if the current racing surface is not replaced with a new and kinder racing surface before the next racing season, the Oregon Racing Commission will not be able to approve race dates for Grants Pass Downs," said the letter signed by the state's five racing commissioners.

Gary West of the Dallas Star-Telegram has an article today on the future of Lone Star Park, titled "Prospects are looking up for Lone Star Park" (read the article here)
Wouldn't it be great to see a similar article in the Oregonian one of these days? not that we would ever expect Portland Meadows to join the ranks of the major tracks in the country, but perhaps the Conferderated Tribes of Grand Ronde may one day see an opportunity at Delta Park?
Often it seems like you just need to hang around long enough for the tide to go your way.
Kruger Park and Ex Mountain Cop headline the Inaugural Handicap in the first day of Portland Meadows’ 64th season of live racing. Kruger Park (#6), claimed for $50,000 at Santa Anita in March, was relocated to Emerald Downs where he won the Seattle Handicap and the Fox Sports Net Handicap.
2008’s Inaugural winner, Ex Mountain Cop (#4) is coming in off a layoff, and trainer Jonathan Nance has been pointing him towards the opening day race. Rockinstomper (#7), the winner of the 2007 Inaugural, will also be in the field.
Chickasaw Park (#2) and Immigration (#4) will both be making their first Portland Meadows starts in the Inaugural Handicap. Jennifer Whitaker will ride Immigration for trainer Howard Belvoir. Stealth Attack (#1), Mystic Wood (#3), Shezaluckypenny (#8), Only Because (#9), and Dance Composer (#10) complete the field. The Inaugural is the 8th race on the Portland Meadows Opening Day card. First post time is 12:45pm.

A message from Sally Reid
An Open letter to all Oregon Horsemen:
Due to safety concerns for both horses & jockeys, UNLESS we replaced the racing surface, the Oregon Racing Commisssion advised they will not give Grants Pass racing dates for 2010. As most of you are aware the discussion of a new track surface has been on the back burner for almost 3 years. The ORC decision merely put all the talk into action! The projected cost: $135,000 for the dirt exchange, $40,000 to refurbish and improve the base and $20,000 to install a drain system in the in-field to avoid flooding on the front side....the total being $195,000. Thanks to the OHBPA ($10,000) the OTOBA ($5000.) the OQHA ($5000.) Carl Alleman ($5000.) anonymous donor ($70,000.) another anonymous donor ($5000.) SOHRA ($5000.) & the Josephine County Commissioners ($35,000.) bringing the total to $140,000. We are still short $35,000, however work on the project commenced on september 21st. The base is redone and the dirt transfer (from the old Mint farm) is commencing 9/29.
We know that in these tough economic times everyone is struggling. However, if we as a racing community were to lose any racing dates, it would be a significant negative economic impact on both the horsemen and our communities. We are hopeful that the new surface will facilitate longer winter training, protect our riders & horses and best of all may help revive longer race dates at Grants Pass, since rain would not be a major factor.
